Rats Chewing Car Wires in Metro Vancouver: What to Do

Updated October 2026.

If rats have chewed your car’s wiring, get it inspected by a mechanic before driving, ask your insurer whether it’s covered, and then remove what attracts rats to where you park. Keep the garage or driveway free of food and clutter, and set rat traps along the garage walls.

Signs rats are getting into your car

  • Warning lights or electrical faults that appear suddenly
  • Chewed wires, hoses or insulation under the hood
  • Droppings, nesting material or food stashes in the engine bay or air filter box
  • Gnaw marks or droppings along the garage walls

What to do

  1. Don’t ignore warning lights. Have a mechanic check the damage.
  2. Call your insurer. Some comprehensive policies cover animal damage; ask before repairs.
  3. Remove attractants: pet food, bird seed, garbage and recycling, and stored food in the garage.
  4. Clear clutter near where you park, so rats have nowhere to hide.
  5. Trap along the walls of the garage or carport, 2–3 m apart, baited lightly.
  6. Close gaps in the garage once activity stops.

Why not poison?

In BC, second-generation rat poisons are banned for homes and most businesses, and poisoned rats can die inside walls or vehicles. Traps let you remove the rat.

Safety: keep every trap out of reach of children, pets and non-target animals, check traps at least daily, and follow the instructions in the box.
